The pan-Wales Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research based at Swansea University has secured £1.2m in funding which will enable the project to continue until 2020.

Swansea University reports that the funding for Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research (CADR) has been awarded by Health and Care Research Wales on behalf of the Welsh Government.

The announcement was made by Vaughan Gething, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport, at the Health and Care Research Wales Conference, who highlighted the importance of continued support and investment for research in Wales.

CADR, which is funded by the Welsh Government through Health and Care Research Wales, is a world class research centre addressing key internationally important questions in ageing and dementia. The Centre integrates multidisciplinary activity and develops areas of expertise from biological, psychosocial and environmental, to social policy in ageing and dementia.

Professor Vanessa Burholt, CADR Director, said “CADR is shaping a new breed of interdisciplinary researchers with new visions for future scientific challenges. Furthermore, by bringing our interdisciplinary scientific community together with stakeholders and users of research we make great impact. This funding announcement ensures that we can continue to conduct leading research, and respond to the challenges of an ageing population. This year we’ve created research partnerships and collaborations with the NHS, government, industry and the third sector, resulting in tangible benefits to health, wellbeing and independence in later life.”
