To coincide with World Diabetes Day today, the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru based at Swansea University Medical School is pleased to announce funding for a further two years to continue their important research.

Swansea University reports that the award of £999,426 has been awarded by Health and Care Research Wales on behalf of the Welsh Government.

In Wales 7.3% of the population aged over the age of seventeen live with diabetes, the highest prevalence in the UK. Diabetes affects all sections of society and accounts for 10% of NHS spending. Around 20% of hospital in patients in Wales have diabetes. Research into ways of both preventing and coping with the diabetes epidemic is a priority.

The Diabetes Research Unit Cymru was established in April 2015 to address these important healthcare needs by undertaking and supporting a comprehensive, integrated translational research programme, designed to advance development and implementation of therapeutic strategies for prevention treatment and self-management of diabetes.
